Stain Base Instructions

  • Cover your work area
  • Put on an old shirt that you don’t mind getting messy
  • Put your gloves on
  • Grab a rag and dip into your stain
  • Do not saturate, a little stain goes a LONG way
  • Rub the stain in the direction of the wood grain.  Make sure to get the sides
  • ONLY ONE coat of stain, do not soak the wood, it will never dry
  • Grab a clean rag and wipe down the wood
  • Let dry for 30-40 minutes (If you put on too soon, the stencil may not stick.)
  • While that dries, grab a credit card and rub over your stencil, we want the stencil to adhere completely to the transfer tape
  • Once stain has dried, use your sanding block and sand the surface area. *If you have several projects, sand the lightest colored wood first**
  • Flip stencil so the white side is facing up. Gently peel away the white backing from the stencil, if any blue is still on the white, lay back down and rub it down.
  • Take your stencil and gently center it on the board, it won’t stick completely so you can adjust the stencil before pressing it down
  • Once in place, use your hands to rub over it and make sure it is smooth.
  • Use credit card to rub over stencil to adhere to the wood
  • Start at the TOP, SLOWLY start to peel the clear transfer tape away from the blue stencil. If any of the blue is stuck to the tape, lay it back down and rub over it again. **this step takes a little patience**
  • Once the stencil is on, it is time to paint
  • LESS IS MORE! A LITTLE GOES A LONG WAY! This is the most important part!
  • Dip your brush into the paint, dab up and down and then GENTLY smooth the paint so you can see the stencil. Too much paint will bleed under the stencil!
  • Let the first coat dry for 10 minutes and go over it again
  • Once it is dry, it’s time to peel the stencil off
  • Start at one corner and peel away!  The stencil can rip, that’s ok!
  • Once the stencil is off, you can use a sharp tool, (ie: a large safety pin, exacto knife,) to peel the little inside pieces out
  • You can use your little tool to gently scrape away any bleeds you may have
